With winter approaching, it might not seem like it is the best time to get started with a renovation project, but the season does tend to have a surprising amount of appeal for the DIY enthusiast. There are less vacations during the winter, less time outdoors or needing to do in the yard, as well as some time of work for the holidays, can make it a good time to get some of those projects done that have just been on your list for a while now. Sure, working on something like a new decking area in the yard is going to be tougher in winter than in summer. But there are still plenty of things to do when you’re indoors. Plus, some renovations or checks in the home are going to be essential, if you want to save costs later down the line, as cold weather can cause a lot of problems.
You might not want to get roofers in during the winter, for example. But if your roof isn’t checked often enough, then the inclement weather that can come in winter can definitely be enough to cause some harm. So something like that might not seem like a great option for winter, but it can be a good option in the long term. With all of that in mind, here are a few other areas to think about when it comes to your home in winter.
Kitchen Counter tops
It can be a pretty simple job and not take up that much time. But replacing the kitchen counter tops is something that can make a big difference to the appearance of your kitchen, and it won’t involve having to go indoors and outdoors all that much. In fact, you could do it yourself, if you have a little expertise when it comes to tools.
Light Fittings
Winter is a time when things start to get darker much earlier, and in our homes, our lights are what make such a difference. But because winter can wreak a lot of havoc on our bodies, and can even lead to things like seasonal effective disorder, being able to help yourself a little on the way, does have an impact. So think about swapping out some tired old lights with some bright and cheery fixtures, and it can help to improve your spirits and literally brighten the mood in the home.
Carpets
Winter is the time when your carpets are going to take a bit of a beating. You are likely to have more people in the home over the winter months (for the holidays predominantly), as well as from mud, snow, and rain that is likely to happen much more over the winter time. So before it all starts, why not start off with a brand new, full-thread carpet, so that by the time the new year rolls around, you aren’t left with some ripped or thin-looking carpet? Again, it isn’t something that takes too long, so it is definitely worth looking into.
