The roof over your head is one of the most important components of your home. It helps to keep adverse weather out of your home, it helps to keep pests away and it protects you from thieves. The quality of your roofing material and design are also incredibly important as it can have a huge effect on how long it can stand against pests and adverse weather, but it’s often difficult to tell the condition of your roof without experience.

So in this post, we’ve put together a list of some things to look out for when the quality of your roof is starting to become problematic.

1. You’re experiencing leaks in your home

Leaks are a common issue if your roof is damaged, but they can be difficult to identify because it’s not immediately obvious where the leak is coming from. This is when an expert can come in handy to inspect your roof and also your attic to see where the leak is coming from. The source of the leak is usually something that can be repaired, such as a loose shingle or damaged flashing which is made to prevent the flow of water into your roof. Unfortunately, if the leak has been happening for a while it may have caused structural damage to your home and should also be a concern.

2. Some of your shingles or tiles are bent or cracked

Broken or warped shingles is a common sign of an ageing roof. Luckily, it can be dealt with easily by a roofing contractor without much struggle, but it can also be dealt with if you have safety equipment, a helping hand and some knowledge on how to replace shingles and tiles. Replacing these early is very important, so make sure you do this as soon as possible.

3. You’re noticing pests and rodents invading your home

Whether it’s insects, rats or even squirrels, your roof can be a potential breeding ground for different pests if it’s suffered damage or provides shelter for rodents. This is something that can be examined visually by just looking at your roof to inspect it, but there are some smaller rodents and pests that can be hidden inside the structure of your home. If you notice a drastic increase in different pests and rodents in your home, then it’s best to deal with it immediately.

4. You’re getting discolored or moldy walls inside your home

This is often a sign that water damage is seeping into the structure of your home, but not enough that it’s causing leaks. Instead, it’s being soaked into the structure of your home which is causing wood to rot and potentially weaken which will cause mold growth as well. This is a concerning issue as the damage to the structure of your home could eventually cause walls to sag or even floors to collapse if it’s done a lot of damage. This is an immediate concern that should be addressed as soon as possible.
