TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL WELL BEING

Updated: Aug 17, 2020

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. With bad mental well being, you’re directly impacting on your body, and with something that could end up being so constant, it could do damage to your health overall. Here are some tips to improve your mental health.

Set Aside Time To Focus On You

Time is precious, but that doesn’t mean you need to wear yourself out with an overly active and busy work life and social life. Too much of this can end up burning you out, and it leaves no time for yourself. Set aside some time so that you can focus on yourself. Do something that you enjoy doing and ensure you make time for this on a weekly basis. Self-care is important, and it can contribute to a healthy mind, so don’t deny yourself a bit of ‘me time’ every now and then.

Consider Flexibility At Work

Businesses are starting to understand the importance of a work-life balance. A lot of us will work jobs that are long hours and have very little flexibility. But none of that is good for your mental well being. Not having the option to switch off or have a little flexibility within the workplace can be tough, but it’s a good idea to speak to your workplace about it. Is there anything they can do to help or could you make some suggestions to help make your workload a bit more manageable? It’s good to have an open conversation with your manager and to see what a company can do to help it’s employees.

Talk With Those You Trust

Trust is definitely important, particularly when you want to talk about how your feeling. Having that person or persons who you can trust can be a great opportunity in being to offload or vent when needed. It’s still difficult for some people to communicate those issues they have, but it’s important to know that it’s worse if you try to keep those thoughts bottled up. Whether you’re dealing with home hospice care for a family member or grieving the loss of someone close, they do nothing to improve your mental state of mind. So when you need to, speak to someone whether it’s a friend or if it helps, a professional.

Eat Healthily

And finally, what you put into your body can affect your mood and how you’re feeling. Eating healthily is one way you can help improve both your general health but also your mental well being too. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your daily meals and avoid the takeouts and junk food where possible. They are a great temporary high, but that high won’t last, and if anything it will make you feel worse later on. The same goes for alcohol and other drugs when you’re not feeling yourself, it’s best to avoid these as they can only make the problem worse.

Improving your mental well being is something that takes a lot of practice, and mental health is not always something that you can keep control of. Accept that you’ll mess up and that it’ll be hard but find the steps that work for you to make it better. Don’t keep your thoughts internalized.
